Feltwell 1 Docking Devils 2 - 07/12/08

Docking Devils claimed what can only be described as a magnificent and hard fought victory at Feltwell today and can be hugely proud of their efforts.

With the Devils missing several players through illness, it was important that the boys who filled in believed in themselves and stepped up to the task, which is precisely what they did on a hard pitch which never fully thawed out from an overnight frost.

The first half started well for Docking, with chances falling to Matty and Luke, who both got good shots away, but unfortunately narrowly missed the target. With the Devils on top, it was important that they made their possession count. But, despite several great opportunities created by Lewis and Dom, the ball just wouldn't go in and it was almost inevitable when Feltwell finally had an attack of their own that it resulted in a goal for the home side, with the forward finishing high into the net, giving Ed no chance.

Despite the setback, Docking didn't allow their heads to drop and continued to press for a goal of their own and, sure enough, Matty finally got the goal his tireless running deserved to level the game at 1-1. With halftime approaching and Docking's confidence restored, it was Matty once again who cut in from the right before delivering a perfect finish inside the far post, to send the Devils in to the break 2-1 ahead.

The second half was always going to be a battle, with Docking playing up the hill and into the sun, but the lads dug in superbly well and battled for every ball and for each other, ensuring there was no way through for Feltwell,

At the other end, Arthur came desperately close to grabbing a third goal for the Devils, but his cross shot cannoned off the base of the post and away to safety. With time ticking away, Feltwell had one last chance to grab a late equalised, but a looping shot by their striker ricocheted back off the bar and Dom hacked it to safety.

The boys worked really hard for each other today on an unforgiving pitch and several off them brushed off nasty knocks to carry on and fight for the team when they were most needed. I am really proud of them all today, from the back four, where Harry and Jack fitted in and did extremely well alongside Joe and Will, to the midfield where Lewis was outstanding with Luke. Arthur and Dom worked very hard defensively and offered an outlet with their width, which was much needed and up front, Matty got the goals his efforts deserved to bring the team home.

Well done boys, you made an old man very proud today (or should that be the other way round?).

TOPPS UNITED 2 v DOCKING DEVILS 4 - 02/11/08

Docking Devils made it three wins out of three with their best performance of the season, away to a very strong Topps United side at Lynnsport.

In an evenly contested opening period on a very wet pitch, both teams were a credit to their clubs, getting the ball down and playing some good football in a good spirit in difficult conditions. The early chances fell to Topps, but with the back four defending well and Ed showing some assured handling in goal, the Devils managed to keep the home side out.

With Matty's pace up front, the midfield looking to find runners and Dom and Jamie offering pace and width on both flanks, the Devils always looked capable of scoring a goal on the break. And so it proved midway through the first half, when Luke played a superb ball through the defence to put Matty through on goal, and he made no mistake with his finish, carrying the ball into the box before sending an unerring shot into the bottom corner of the net.

However, the game was always on a knife edge, with Topps Utd having sustained spells of possession in and around the Devils' penalty area and their striker can count himself particularly unlucky not to have scored when clean through, when the ball got caught under his feet in a deep puddle of water.

Despite some nervy moments, Docking were still playing well and looking to double their advantage. And so it proved on twenty minutes. Some strong defending and a clever pass by Arthur put Jamie in space and his ball sent Matty through on goal again. As with his first chance, Matty made no mistake, looking up and slotting the ball low into the corner of the goal, giving the keeper no chance.

With half time approaching, Docking were desperate to hold onto their clean sheet until the break. But Topps were equally deternined to get a foothold back in the game, and their good play finally earned some reward right on the half time whistle, when their striker got in on goal and sent a powerful shot past Ed.

With the team having switched off in the second half in their previous game, they were give a strong reminder in the half time team talk that any repeat of that would see Topps capitalise, so the team went back out determined not to let their concentration lapse, knowing the next goal was crucial.

Whatever was said clearly worked, as there was no let up in the Devils concentration and work rate, and the vital third goal soon came, following a good throw by Dom which was cleverly flicked on by Harry to put Matty in on goal. Despite being at an acute angle, with not much goal to aim at, Matty completed an exceptional hat-trick, with a low finish across goal which found the net at the base of the far post.

However, a spirited Topps side still weren't finished and they soon had the score back to 3-2, following some good play down the middle before their striker once again finished with an excellent strike.

The game was back in the balance again, but the back four didn't let their heads drop and battled for every ball, the midfield continued to pass rather than panic and Will had an excellent long-range strike saved on the line by the Topps keeper, after he'd spilled the initial shot.

Docking desperately needed another goal to ease the pressure on their goal and, just when it was needed, Jamie popped up on the left before cutting inside and sending a low shot into the far corner of the net to restore the Devils' two goal advantage.

It was now a case of staying focussed, keeping their shape and seeing the game out. And, despite a couple of close calls, great tackling and some brilliant handling by Ed in goal in appalling conditions ensured the points were safe.

Every single player can be rightly proud of their performance today against a very good Topps side. They have all raised their game to a new level in recent weeks and I am very proud of them all for their efforts.

The key now is to maintain it, which we will be working hard to ensure they do.

Well done, boys. Keep it up.

Team: Ed, Will, Lewis, Joe, Arthur, Dom, Harry, Luke, Jamie, Will, Matty, Lee, Harry.

 DOCKING DEVILS 6 v DOWNHAM B 3 - 26/10/08

Docking registered their second win in as many weeks against a good Downham side, who gave the Devils a real scare with a spirited second half comeback.

The Devils began the game strongly and were soon ahead through a goal from Matty, following some good work from Luke in the left channel. The Devils went close again soon after, following a mazy run by Arthur on the left, but a Downham defender got back well to put him off, just as he shaped to shoot, and the ball rolled harmlessly wide.

However, the Devils soon had a two goal lead, following a melée in the box after a good corner by Luke was helped on by Harry. The ball finally fell to Dom, who unleashed a powerful drive into the roof of the net.

With Ed assured in goal, Docking managed to keep Downham at bay, despite some good attacks by the visitors down their left and it was the home side once again who got the next goal. An under hit goalkick by the Downham keeper was picked up by Matty, who raced through on goal, but the keeper was quickly off his line and appeared to have done enough to prevent Matty shooting. But the Docking striker managed to turn away from the goalie before driving the ball into an unguarded net, as the Downham defence tried to race back.

It was Matty on target again for the home side five minutes later, once again managing to power his way past the Downham defence before finishing low into the net.

With the score 4-0 to Docking and half time approaching, Downham's spirited play finally brought them some deserved reward, with their striker finishing neatly past Ed from just inside the box to make the half time score 4-1 to Docking.

In the half time team talk, the Docking players were reminded that the game wasn't over and that Downham's goal would have given them a much-needed boost for the second half. However, despite being told that they had to stay focussed and determined, the Devils switched off as soon as the whistle blew and Downham enjoyed some sustained pressure in Docking's half.

They were soon rewarded for their good play with another goal and another good finish, making the score 4-2 and suddenly making the game a tense affair. Despite not being at their best, Docking managed another goal of their own, with Luke finishing well from the edge of the area with a low curling shot, to give the home side some much needed breathing space again.

However, Docking's relief was short-lived, as they continued to play sloppily and, yet again, allowed Downham back into the game, following an excellent move and shot that gave Ed no chance, making it 5-3 to Docking with six or seven minutes remaining.

Downham now looked the more likely side to score again, but an opportunist strike by Dom, who hit the ball first time straight back into the net from a Downham goal kick, was enough to finally settle the game in Docking's favour, with the home side 6-3 up at the final whistle.

Whilst the boys can be proud of the good things they did in the game and proud of themselves for winning when not playing well, they have plenty to learn from this game. If you switch off in a football match and think the game is won, you can (and often will) be punished by the opposition. Our games last 60 minutes, not 30 minutes, and to translate your ability into results, it is vital you play to your best for the entire game.

Enjoy the win, boys, but learn from the game too.

Team: Ed, Harry, Joe, Lewis, Will, Dom, Harry, Luke, Arthur, Lee, Matty.

MARHAM 2 v DOCKING DEVILS 4 - 12/10/08

Docking ran out deserved 4-2 winners in a well fought contest away to Marham, to record a much deserved first win of the season.

Docking began the first half slowly, with Marham putting pressure on the visitors' goal and the Docking team getting pegged back in the final third of the pitch. However, with Ed playing superbly in goal, coming off his line to claim everything, the home side didn't really look like scoring.

Slowly but surely, Docking began to get a foothold in the game, with Will, Joe, Lewis and Lee clearing their lines well and pushing their defensive line much further up the pitch.

In midfield, Will, Harry, Luke and Dom were working extremely hard to dominate the game, but it was Jamie on the left wing who was to put in a performance worthy of winning any game.

Having weathered the early storm, Docking began to create chances of their own, with Jamie and Matt going close to opening the scoring, and it could only be hoped that they wouldn't rue not taking those chances later on. However, Docking soon had the lead, with Jamie putting the ball into the net following strong work by Luke and Matt to create the chance.

With a first goal under their belts, it wasn't long before Docking doubled their advantage. This time, it was a fine run by Matt, who fed Jamie just inside the box, and the left winger curled an unstoppable right foot shot into the far corner of the net.

Docking were flying now and looking to score at every opportunity and, just before half time, Will played a lovely ball over the top of the Marham defence, for Matt to muscle his way through and bag his second of the game to give Docking a 3-0 advantage going in at the break.

The Devils knew the job wasn't done though, and that Marham would come out all guns blazing in the second half, as they tried to get back in the game. Sure enough, it was the home side who went on the attack after the interval, with Docking trying to catch them on the break using their pace on both flanks.

However, despite Ed continuing to play superbly in goal, saving and kicking magnificently, Marham eventually got the goal their pressure deserved, with a fine looping shot from the edge of the area that gave Ed no chance.

Docking didn't panic though, and continued to play on the break and soon re-established their three goal advantage, with the best goal of the match. Jamie picked the ball up deep inside his own half from Harry, who did brilliantly at left back, and skipped past one challenge before beating the right back and driving into the box. He then played a superb cross into the box which evaded the Marham keeper, allowing Matt to tap into an empty net.

Docking just needed to see the game out now, and appeared to be doing so, thanks to strong defending from everyone and Ed's continued great form in goal. However, with five minutes remaining, a defensive mix up saw Harry poke the ball past the advancing Ed in goal, to make the score 4-2, but there were few other chances for the home side and Docking were able to deservedly claim their first win of the season.

Well done, boys. You've shown me what I was telling you all along - you're good players and just need to believe it. Let's have more of the same next week.

Team: Ed, Will, Lewis, Joe, Lee, Dom, Harry, Luke, Jamie, Will, Matt, Harry.

Man Of The Match - Jamie.

CLENCHWARTON 5 v DOCKING DEVILS 1 - 28/09/08

Once again the lads went into this tough fixture with only 11 players, meaning that we start as underdogs against a 14 man squad at Clenchwarton.

True to form we started slowly giving the ball away too cheaply and invited Clenchwarton to attack at will, and it was just a matter of time before the defensive lines were broken. The lads are still learning to play the offside rule to their advantage and with some confusion in the back four we let the opposition pin us back deep into our own half for long spells. We made some excellent counter attacks at times putting some pressure on their defence and giving ours a much needed break. The whistle blew for half time and the Devils were 3-0 down but still positive they could turn this game around.

Changes made at half time saw Luke drop back into left back and Arthur moving into a inside left to break up the midfield and give the ball to outside left Jamie who was just starting to get some excellent runs together. Lewis decided to give Matty the strikers role and dropped back into centre mid , again with the aim to break Clenchwarton's grip on the midfield battle and feed the ball through to Matty to run onto. To a large degree this worked well and the Devils created several scoring opportunities with Jamie, Matty and Dom all coming close and Harry just firing over from a good long range effort. The opposition were on the ropes and we took advantage, Arthur put in a strong tackle on the half way line, Luke quickly followed up and played a great little chip over their defence giving Matty the chance to run at the keeper cleverly creating an angle and blasting the ball into the net. Despite all the Docking pressure Clenchwarton bounced back with a couple more goals in the dying minutes finishing 5-1 winners.

My man of the match was our captain Joe for heroic defending in the first half and a much better organisation of his defence in the second half. Well done also to Matt C., Lee, Arthur, Luke and Ed for solid defending . More practice with his back four will result in fewer goals being conceded and I'm pleased to report we are making excellent progress in that crucial area.

Team: Ed, Lee, Matt C, Joe, Arthur, Dom, Harry, Matty R, Luke, Jamie and Lewis

Well done to all the lads on a battling performance .
